School libraries are essential to the development of students as life-long learners and library users. The
Tyler library supports the curriculum and provides a variety of materials to promote learning and encourage reading for pleasure. Student library use is based on need, rather than a schedule. Students are welcome to come to the library to research or check out books whenever it is convenient for their teacher to send them. Children travel to and from the library in small groups throughout the day. They are encouraged to exchange their books frequently – the number of books that a student may check out is limited, but not the frequency of visits to the library.

Kindergarten and 1st Grade – 1 book at a time
2nd, 3rd, and 4th Grades – 2 books
5th Grade – 3 books

Your child may keep a book up to two weeks, and may exchange it for another book at any time during that two-week period. We hope that getting in the habit of using the library at the point of need will help students form the library “habit” and will foster a love of learning and recreational reading.
If your child has misplaced a library book, ask him or her to come to the library and talk to Mrs. Thaete or Mrs. Newman. Missing books are sometimes returned to the library by another child, and may not actually be lost. If it is determined that the book is not in the library, the student will be encouraged to look in the classroom and to look again at home. If a book is lost, payment is usually not requested until the end of the school year. Books tend to turn up!  Call Mrs. Newman or send a note, and your child may continue to check out books while you look together for the one that is missing. A bill will be sent in June.

Overdue Notices

Notices for overdue books are usually sent home each grading period. It is only a reminder for the student to find their book and visit the library soon. We do NOT charge fines for overdue books, but lost or badly damaged books do need to be replaced. If the student knows that a book has been destroyed, or is sure that it is lost, the book can be paid for when the notice is received. (The price of the book is on the notice.)

Care of Library Books

Please help your child to understand their responsibility to care for library materials.
  • Keep books in a safe place, out of reach of small children and pets.
  • Keep books dry and clean. Make sure that backpacks are also dry and clean.
  • If something should happen to the book, please do not repair it. The library has special tapes and glues for book repair. Just enclose a note, or tell us about it. We’ll do our best to save it!
Library Classes

All
Tyler students come to the library every 6 days for scheduled classes with Mrs. Thaete. These lessons might be story times, author and genre studies, or research skills using the Information Management Process.
